British Mohair Marketing has chosen to partner with SEAL International as our exclusive commercial processing partner. SEAL International are leaders in this specialist field and keeping a traditional industry alive in Bradford which was once the centre of Mohair processing for the world.
The true beauty (and value) of Mohair is only achieved by careful and expert processing, to take the raw fibre and turn it into a luxurious fibre ready to be spun, blended or woven into a wide range of products. SEAL International share our passion for Mohair and help us to realise the reality of a sustainable luxury product with the environmental benefits of local processing.
In conjunction with our independent producers (and their Angora goats!) this partnership provides the transparency of origin and traceability through the distribution chain to maintain the authenticity of British Mohair, as denoted by the British Mohair Origin Assured branding.
The Recognised Breed Association for Angora Goats in the UK
The British Angora Goat Society (often abbreviated to BAGS) is the recognised breed association for Angora Goats in the United Kingdom. It maintains the breed registration database on the Grassroots system and provides services to members. Note that animals cannot generally be registered unless both parents are also listed in the registration database. However, British Mohair Marketing Ltd will accept mohair for sale from it’s members from both registered and unregistered Angora goats, as long as they are purebred (i.e. no pygoras, cashgoras and other crossbreeds).
Mohair Fibre Testing Services
The value of mohair is heavily influenced by the mean fibre diameter and staple length and BMM encourages members to have fleeces objectively analysed to measure and improve the quality of the mohair they produce. Using the latest in fleece testing technology, WTAE provides impartial and accurate measurement of mohair fleeces using OFDA 2000. This allows test samples to be taken straight from the animal with minimal sample preparation, providing a quick and cost-effective fleece testing service with no compromise on quality.
