About Us

British Mohair Marketing Ltd is a mutual society run for the benefit of it’s members. Our purpose is to provide services relating to the production, collection, consolidation and sale of members mohair in a a convenient and profitable manner. We work with processors and other organisations to promote British Mohair from our UK-based producers (including those who process their own mohair and sell the resulting products directly) as a sustainable and environmentally sound luxury product, produced in a responsible and ethical manner with the highest possible livestock welfare standards.

British Mohair production faces serious challenges!

Over the past decade Angora Goats and the Mohair they produce have suffered a series of setbacks which have created very challenging conditions within the global industry.

Under pressure from environmental concerns, increasing legislation and societal concerns over the use of animal by-products means livestock farming faces growing challenges.

Exposure of poor animal welfare standards at some large Angora farms overseas have forced many fashion houses and retailers to withdraw Mohair products from sale, impacting global demand and depressing market prices of raw mohair.

Lower market demand for mohair has impacted the specialist processors of raw fibre increasing costs and forcing closures.

With advancing age many breeders are retiring reducing the numbers of Angora goats in the UK

The UK Government designation of goats as a “minor species” of farm animal sends a negative message to the agricultural industry reducing the acceptance of goats as a serious option.

The combined impact of these trends requires a new approach which considers the bigger picture and a reappraisal of the complete ecosystem surrounding Mohair production and the creation of a tightly integrated supply chain

Join BMM!

Joining BMM is easy, but because we are a Mutual Limited company you have to buy a share and sign an agreement. There are NO annual subscriptions, simply a one-off joining fee (currently set at £30, but under review). All of the operating costs incurred by BMM are covered by the small levy we charge on each kg of raw fleece we handle. Simply send an email to info@british-mohair.org and we will send you the membership agreement and details of payment.  That’s it!

Remember, BMM is only interested in your Mohair!  We don’t mind if your Angora goats are registered with BAGS or not (although would like it if they were!) as long as they are purebred. Neither do we mind how much (or how little) raw mohair you want to supply, whether it is 2kg or 200kg (or even more!) we don’t care and we pay the same price per kg irrespective of the quantity.
